Summer weather often brings to mind lazy afternoons lying in a hammock, enjoying a cool breeze and a good book. If you're short on yard space but still want to enjoy the charms of swinging in a hammock, create a hammock chair. This comfortable fabric pouch hangs from a tree branch or porch rafters, cradling your body while you swing. Use an old woven blanket as the base for a soft and comfortable summer seat.
Things You'll Need
Rope
Scissors or knife
Lay a woven blanket out flat on the ground with the longer edges at the top and the bottom. Bunch up the entire right edge into one bundle. Tie an overhand knot at this end. Bunch up the left edge and knot it in the same manner.
Cut two pieces of strong rope at least 10 feet long. The actual length you need for your rope depends the height of the horizontal pole on which you'll hang your hammock chair. Experiment with one rope without cutting, then cut off the excess rope and cut another piece to match in length.
Make a loop in the end of the rope to form a circle about 6 feet across. Lay one end of the loop across the horizontal pole and slide the rest of the rope through the loop. This will encase the pole in the loop.
Make a lark's head knot at the end of the loop by folding the loop back on itself, forming a slipping knot. Push the knot on one end of the blanket through the rope knot and pull sharply, tightening the knot.
Hang the other rope about 3 feet away along the same pole. Make a lark's head knot at the end of that loop and tie it to the knot at the other end of the blanket.
Tips & Warnings
Most sheets are strong enough to use on this project, and make a cooler hammock chair.
