The cascade palm (Chamaedorea cataractarum), also know as the cat palm, is primarily grown as an indoor tree. Its large, dark green fronds provide dense foliage. Cascade palms grow to about 3 feet tall and produce shrubby growth along the short trunks, making them a bushier palm variety compared to single trunk types. These palms naturally grow near streams and fresh water sources in warm climates, so they have higher moisture needs than other palm varieties.
Things You'll Need
Spray bottle
Soluble tropical plant fertilizer
Provide cascade palms with indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves and cause rapid moisture loss. Locations that receive bright but indirect sunlight for at least half the day are preferred.
Maintain a temperature above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and preferably between 70 and 80 degrees, at all times. Select locations away from air conditioner vents or drafts because cooler air can damage the palm.
Water cascade palms one to two times a week, or when the soil surface begins to dry but before the soil feels dry beneath the surface. These palms require soil that remains evenly moist with no drying around the root system.
Mist the fronds with water every one to two days to keep the fronds clean and raise the humidity level around the plants. A humidifier may be necessary during dry winter conditions. Grouping several plants together also helps raise the moisture level in the air surrounding the palm..
Apply a soluble tropical houseplant fertilizer monthly during the spring and summer growing season. Apply the fertilizer at half the package recommended rate.
Tips & Warnings
Cascade palms require no pruning but you can remove dead foliage to improve the appearance of the plant.
