How to Change a Weed Eater Spool. A Weed Eater can be a great tool to help you keep your yard trimmed and looking neat around the edges. Unfortunately, the plastic cording only lasts so long on a spool before you need to change it. When that happens to your Weed Eater, here's how to change the spool of monofilament.
A Weed Eater can be a great tool to help you keep your yard trimmed and looking neat around the edges. Unfortunately, the plastic cording only lasts so long on a spool before you need to change it. When that happens to your Weed Eater, here's how to change the spool of monofilament.
Things You'll Need
Weed Eater replacement line
Unplug the Weed Eater if it is an electric one. Remove the spark plug if the model is a gas trimmer.
Tip the unit so you can have easy access to the spool. Unscrew the cap in the direction shown on your model of Weed Eater. Pull the spool off the Weed Eater. Clean any grass and debris from the head of the Weed Eater at this time.
Unroll approximately 30 feet of Weed Eater replacement line from the replacement spool. Make sure it is the correct diameter for your Weed Eater.
Insert one inch of the Weed Eater line into the center of the Weed Eater's spool. Wrap the Weed Eater line snugly on to the Weed Eater spool. Wrap it in the direction of the arrow on the spool.
Run the tail of Weed Eater cord out through the feedhole. Put the spool back on the Weed Eater with four to six inches of tail extending from the Weed Eater. Hand tighten the cap back in place.
Put the spark plug back in the Weed Eater or plug it in. Start the Weed Eater. Continue trimming weeds. You may need to tap the unit on the ground to get it to feed properly. If it doesn't, disconnect the power source and check that the line is feeding properly through the feed hole.
