How to Plant Encore Azaleas. Encore azaleas are beautiful plants, even when they're not in bloom. But when they bloom during the spring, summer and fall, the display is breathtaking. Encore azaleas are beautiful plants, even when they're not in bloom. But when they bloom during the spring, summer and fall, the display is breathtaking. These show stoppers are available in 24 different varieties, and boast whites, pinks, purples, reds and oranges. Encores require the same care as more traditional azaleas. While they can tolerate more sun than their predecessors can, the best site for them is a location that receives some shade during the day.

Azalea fertilizer

Water the Encore azalea while it is still in the pot.
Dig a hole as deep as the plant's container and about twice as wide. Pour an inch or two of water into the hole, and allow it to soak into the soil.
Remove the plant from the container, and gently spread the roots on the outside of the root ball with your fingers.
Create a 2 to 4 inch mound of soil in the center of the hole and set the azalea's root ball on top of the mound. Pour soil into the hole around the plant's roots and firm into place. Pour in about ? inch of water to remove any air pockets and to settle the soil. Add azalea fertilizer as per the packaging instructions.
Fill the rest of the hole with soil, and firm it around the Encore azalea, which should now be planted at the same level that it occupied in its original container.
Mulch the plant about 2 inches deep at its outer leaf line, and water it well.
Keep the Encore azalea evenly moist, but never wet or soggy. Repeat fertilizer applications according to the packaging instructions.
