Aqua water globes are convenient in making sure plants are hydrated, especially during hot weather and while away on trips. Aqua globes work by providing a source of water for plants; plants absorb water from the container and displace the amount absorbed with air. Commercially available aqua water globes are decorated to enhance the look of the patio or garden. Aqua water globes can be made at home using recycled soda or water bottles to save money.
Things You'll Need
Plastic bottle with cap
2-inch nail
Candle
Light the candle and heat the tip of the nail. Use the nail tip to bore a hole in the neck of the plastic bottle (just below the cap). If desired, bore a second hole on the other side of the neck.
Fill the bottle with water and screw the cap on.
Invert the bottle (cap-side down) and insert the bottle into the soil, making sure that the neck is submerged.
Check the water bottle periodically to determine the plant's water consumption.
Tips & Warnings
Depending on the size and type of plant, the aqua globe should be placed near the area where the roots grow (usually two inches is optimal so that water can be absorbed).
Depending on the plant's water consumption and watering schedule, multiple aqua globes can be placed between plants to supplement watering.
Be careful when heating and handling the nail.
Consider the plant's root distribution when positioning and inserting the bottle so that the bottle doesn't interfere with the root system.
