Gas trimmers have become essential equipment for homeowners and handymen. Lightweight and versatile, these handy tools can be used to trim, mow and edge your lawn to give it a manicured look. The Homelite brand gas trimmers are easy to start and easy to operate; similarly, changing the cutting string can be done in just a few steps.
Things You'll Need
18 feet of .080-inch monofilament cutting line
Heavy-duty scissors
Turn the engine off and disconnect the spark plug wire. Grasp the spool head with one hand and unscrew the spool retainer with your other hand. Remove the spool retainer by turning the spool retainer clockwise for Easy Reach models or counterclockwise for Trimlite and Trim N Edge models.
Pull the spool out of the string head, keeping the spring attached to the spool. Remove any string that remains on the spool and discard.
Measure and cut two nine-foot sections of .080-inch (2.0 millimeter) diameter monofilament string. Locate the anchor hole in the upper part of the spool. Insert one string into the hole and wind it counterclockwise around the upper part of the spool following the direction of the arrows on the spool.
Insert the same string into the slot on the upper spool flange. Pull approximately six feet of line through the slot. Leave approximately 1/4 inch between the string wound on the spool and the outside edge of the spool.
Insert the second string into the anchor hole in the lower part of the spool and wind it counterclockwise around the lower part of the spool following the direction of the arrows. Insert the string into the slot on lower spool flange. Pull approximately 6 feet of line through the slot. Leave approximately 1/4 inch between the string wound on the spool and the outside edge of the spool.
Insert the two strings into the eyelets in the string head. Push the spool into the string head. Grasp the two strings and tug.
Push the spool down and turn it counterclockwise until it no longer turns. Hold the spool steady and turn it clockwise slightly until it locks into place. Release the spool. Make sure that the string head and the spool retainer are properly secured on the drive shaft. Reconnect the spark plug wire.
Tips & Warnings
Never perform maintenance on your trimmer with the spark plug wire in place. For safety, always disconnect the plug wire first.
