Although rubber mulch is a relatively new landscaping product, it is quickly growing in popularity. Because of its cushioning ability, it is often used on playgrounds and horse riding arenas as well as in traditional landscaping. Rubber mulch--made from old tires--is an attractive solution not only because it lasts longer than traditional wood mulch but is a way to recycle rubber that might otherwise end up in a landfill.
Things You'll Need
Shovel
Weed barrier
Rubber mulch
Rake or hoe
Remove all rocks and sticks on the surface of the ground where you intend to place the mulch. If you are installing the mulch in a playground area, dig out the soil to a depth of 6 inches.
Place a layer of weed barrier over the area that will be covered by mulch.
Shovel the rubber mulch over the area. If you are covering a playground, fill the 6-inch-deep area until it is level with the surrounding surface. This thick layer will provide an extra cushioned protection for playing children.
Even the top of the mulch using a rake or hoe to create a smooth and level surface.
