Becoming a dense, rounded shrub with upright and slightly spreading branches, it rarely requires pruning. It is a well-shaped shrub naturally. Occasional light tip pruning can lead to more branching, which leads to more flower clusters.

Hand pruners (secateurs)
Consider pruning only after the shrub has completed its mid-spring flowering. Enjoy the flowers and monitor the return of the foliage by late spring to see if any dead twigs remain after the winter.
Cut away dead twigs or branches with the pruners, making the cut at 1/3 above a branch joint that is still alive. If an entire shrub branch is dead, the cut make go as low as the base of the shrub. Waiting till after flowering and new leaves unfurl makes seeing dead branches easiest.
Look for branches that are rubbing against each other. With a singular pinching stroke of the hand pruners, prune out one of the branches to stop the rubbing damage on the bark. Make the pruning cut 1/3-inch above a junction branch or 1/3-inch above a pair of emerging leaf pairs or dormant buds.
Tip prune any errant branches that encroach upon another shrub or create an awkwardly shaped plant overall. Make the prune cut 1/4-inch above a pair of leaves.
Tips & Warnings
Do not shear this viburnum, as it destroys the nature form of the shrub and drastically limits flowering.
