Vinegar is one of the most often used household products, according to The Vinegar Institute. It's used for laundry, cleaning kitchen counters, for health-related reasons and for doing maintenance on your lawn. You can easily kill grass with vinegar by just paying attention to your surroundings and using the right type of vinegar.
Things You'll Need
Sticks
Vinegar
Examine you yard and look for the spots where you have excess grass. You want to identify the grass you need killed, which helps you determine the amount of vinegar to buy. Mark those areas of your lawn with sticks to find them easily later.
Look for white distilled vinegar, which is also known as pickling vinegar because it's typically used in recipes for pickling vegetables and other items. This comes in glass bottles and plastic bottles, depending on the size and manufacturer.
Pour the vinegar directly on the ground where you want to kill grass. Wait a few minutes for the ground and dirt to absorb the vinegar and then pour more on the ground. You want to keep pouring vinegar onto the grass until it saturates the surrounding areas.
Wait a few days and examine the grass. If you see any signs of the grass growing back, apply another dose of the vinegar. Be careful to only pour the vinegar on areas of the grass you want killed and not let it soak into fresh grass.
Continue checking the grass for several weeks, applying more of the vinegar to the ground whenever you see the grass growing. Eventually the vinegar will kill off the grass and any flowers or weeds it touches, but you may need to apply multiple doses for it to work properly.
Tips & Warnings
Vinegar also works well for killing weeds. Simply pour the vinegar into a plastic spray bottle and spray directly at the tops and roots of the weeds. Reapply the vinegar every day until the weeds die off.
Don't use vinegar on the grass unless it's warm outside. The vinegar doesn't work well in colder temperatures and it may take months for it to work properly.
