A quality garden hose can be quite an investment that you want to last for several years. Winding your hose on a hose reel provides many benefits in safety and protection. Heat and sunlight deteriorate garden hoses and cause breaks and splits that need repair or replacement. Attaching your garden hose and leader hose to your assembled hose reel or cart correctly ensures ease of use.

Step 1
Assembly your hose reel or cart according to the manufacturer's directions on a new reel. Place the hose reel or cart near a water spigot outdoors or in a garage or shed with a water supply.
Step 2
Place the rubber washer onto the female end of the water coupling on the drum. The water coupling has a female and male fitting on it, with internal and external threads respectively. The female end is usually horizontal to the ground and the male end of the water coupling generally is vertical to the ground.
Step 3
Screw one end of the leader hose, supplied with your reel, onto the female end of the water coupling. Turn it clockwise to tighten the hose. Connect the opposite end of the leader hose to the water spigot and tighten it clockwise.
Step 4
Connect the female end of your garden hose onto the male end of the water coupling on the reel's drum. Tighten it clockwise. Retract the hose onto the drum by turning a manual handle clockwise or pressing the retraction button on an electric hose reel.
