Roundworms are a small nematode that can infect both animals and humans. They live in the intestinal tract, and their eggs and offspring are eliminated in the infected organisms' feces. These eggs remain in the ground until they are able to access a new intestinal tract--often because an animal consumes part of the feces--where they hatch and start a new life cycle. Roundworms can cause a variety of symptoms, including malnutrition, coughing, weight loss and abdominal pain. It is vitally important to get rid of round worms in your yard in order to prevent recurring infections.
Things You'll Need
Shovel
Garbage bags
Rubber gloves
Pruning shears
Diatomaceous earth
Clear your yard of all animal waste. Wear your gloves. Use the shovel to pick up the waste and deposit it in a garbage bag rather than tossing it into the shrubs or onto a compost pile.
Prune back as many shrubs as possible. Round worm eggs are viable in the ground for several years. One of the few things that will kill the worms in the eggs is prolonged exposure to sunlight. Clearing the yard of shade may help accelerate the destruction of the eggs.
Spread diatomaceous earth in your yard. This soil contains fossilized, microscopic organisms that are very sharp. They may kill hatched round worms and destroy eggs.
Keep your yard clear of animal waste for the next few months. Each day, remove all waste from your yard or your animal may experience reinfection.
Tips & Warnings
Have your pet checked at regular intervals for reinfection until a year has passed without further health problems.
Removing the top layer of soil from a yard can take round worms with it, but this will not likely be 100 percent effective without additional measures.
