Before you repair or rebuild a small lawn mower engine, it is a good idea to clean it. This is essential so you don't get any debris, grass, grease, or oil into the crucial parts of the engine as you disassemble it. You must remove a few items before cleaning the engine, but after that it is a fairly straightforward task.
Things You'll Need
Flat-head screwdriver
Duct tape
Degreaser spray
Water source
Pressure washer
Unscrew the air filter cover on the side of the engine. Take out the air filter. Tape over the air filter intake hole with duct tape.
Unscrew the six to eight screws holding the pull start or flywheel housing on top of the engine. Pull the housing off once you have all the screws out.
Spray degreaser spray on all the oily and greasy spots of the engine. These areas include the engine block sidewalls and the carburetor.
Hook the pressure washer up to a water source and plug it into a standard 110-volt outlet.
Spray off the engine from every angle with the pressure washer to remove debris.
