When you reach the point that your newly mown lawn has a ragged or uneven look, it is time to change the twin blades on your Honda lawn mower. Some manufacturers recommend that you replace the blades after every 25 hours of use, but Honda encourages owners to inspect the blades each time before mowing. Even those without much technical expertise can replace the Honda mower blades in 15 minutes or less with the right tools. Replacing blades will restore the groomed look you desire for your lawn after cutting it.
Things You'll Need
Heavy work gloves

14mm six-sided wrench
Torque wrench
Pull the spark plug wire and turn off the fuel gauge. Tilt the mower on its side with the air filter and carburetor facing up so fuel does not inundate the carburetor and make the mower hard to start. Wear work gloves to protect your hands from the sharp edges of the blades.
Wedge the piece of wood between the blades and the mower deck to keep the blades from spinning when you remove them. Use the 14mm six-sided wrench to unscrew the blade bolts in a counterclockwise manner. Set aside the bolts and special washers and remove both blades.
Clean any built-up grass residue in the mower deck while the blades are off. Install sharpened blades and secure them with the blade bolts and special washers, which you must position so that the concave side of the washers faces the blades. Tighten the blade bolts in a clockwise manner with a torque wrench. Stop twisting when the torque measures between 36 and 43 foot-lbs.
Tips & Warnings
Pay close attention to how tightly you screw on the blade bolts with the torque wrench. If you tighten them too much, they may break. Conversely, if they are too loose, the blades could fly off while you mow, creating a hazardous condition.
