Cub Cadet lawn tractors are known for their reliability and toughness, but the part that takes the most pounding are the wheels. It can't be helped, since they are being driven around on lawns to cut grass, and any type of foreign object they run over, from rocks to branches and even potholes will take their toll. If the rim gets damaged or a flat tire happens, you'll need to remove the wheel to affect repairs, and you'll need a little DIY knowledge to get the job done.
Things You'll Need
Flat blade screwdriver
Adjustable wrench
Mallet
Scissors automotive jack
Place the jack under the front axle and slightly jack up the front of your Cub Cadet.
Pry off the plastic hub cover with your flat blade screwdriver. Pry gently--this cover needs to go back on to protect the axle from dirt and debris.
Adjust your wrench to fit the center hub bolt, then unscrew it in a counterclockwise rotation. Unscrew the bolt about 1/4 of the way and pull on the wheel. It should slide off up to the bolt, but if it doesn't, refer to step 4.
Hit the bolt firmly with your mallet several times, then pull on the wheel to see if it dislodges. If it doesn't, hit the bolt again several more times and the wheel will loosen up and dislodge.
Unscrew the center bolt completely, pull off the protective metal sleeve, and slide off the wheel. Any repair can now be done.
Reverse the process to remount the wheel. Secure the center bolt tightly and replace the hub cover by pushing it into place, then use the mallet to tap it on until it is fully seated.
Tips & Warnings
A little spray lube on the axle will make it easier to both take the wheel off and put the wheel back on.
