Plan the decor around your above-ground swimming pool to promote a relaxing environment while maintaining pool safety. The landscaping, furniture and general decor should complement the home and other aspects of the property. The decor should be inviting and promote a comfortable space for you and your guests to enjoy the pool or the yard.
Things You'll Need
Wood
Flowers/plants
Patio furniture
Build a deck around the pool, which can create the illusion of an in-ground pool depending on how high and large you build the deck. The deck can contain multiple levels, extend from one side of the pool or only provide steps to the pool. Wood or tile decks are appropriate, as long as the material is waterproof and skid resistant. Wood can also be used to build a fence around the pool that solely serves to make the pool walls more attractive view.
Plant bushes, flowers or shrubs around the pool. If you opt for a large deck, consider large urns and pots filled with flowers to add color. The plants should complement the rest of the landscaping in your yard. For example, if you have desert landscaping, opt for cacti or other desert plants. If you have a lush, tropical garden, use tropical-type plants, such as birds of paradise.
Set up patio furniture, benches or other comfortable seating areas around the pool to promote lounging and socializing. If any shade is available, consider arranging some seating in the shade as well. The furniture you select should complement other design elements. For example, if you build a large, multi-level wood deck, arrange patio furniture that incorporates the same type (or stain) of wood on different levels.
Add extra elements to the space surrounding the pool, such as a barbecue grill or fire pit, that isn't too close to the pool. Arrange your seating and work areas for the most logical flow of traffic, such as setting up the barbecue area nearer to the house (for frequent trips in and out of the kitchen) and a table or lounge chairs in between the barbecue and pool areas.
Include a piece of furniture that matches your other patio furniture and offers storage for all of the pool toys or necessities to prevent your yard from looking like a pool store and to prolong the life of your pool accessories.
Tips & Warnings
Invest in a safety fence or pool cover for safety reasons when you are not using the pool.
Leave some open space for overzealous children who tend to get excited around the pool. You and your guests shouldn't have to navigate a maze of plants and furniture to get to the pool.
