Safety is an important consideration when operating a Craftsman lawn tractor, and one of the key safety elements is the brakes. The brakes on riding mowers can save your life, and the lives of others. The Craftsman riding mower is tested that it can go from full speed to stopped in 6 feet. Repairing your brake so the brake operating arm is at the correct distance may be required over time as the jam nut on the brake may loosen with wear.
Things You'll Need
Tape measure
Wrench set
Engage the lawn tractor's parking brake.
Lay under the rear axle of your mower.
Search for the braking system on the right side of the axle. The braking system works by an operating arm pressing against a jam nut to lock up the axle when you press the brake.
Measure the distance between the operating arm and the jam nut on the brake with the tape measure. The distance should be 1 1/2 inches. Use the proper-sized wrench to adjust the jam nut so it is 1 1/2 inches away from the operating arm when the parking brake is engaged.
