Gas powered chain saws, such as a Husqvarna, are started by pulling on a starter cord that engages the drive pulley. After prolonged use, the starter cord on the chain saw can get old and worn. When the cord becomes worn it can snap or come loose. When the starter cord on your Husqvarna chain saw snaps or has become loose, you will need to replace it with a new cord.
Things You'll Need
Socket wrench
Starter cord
Set the chain saw up off the ground, such as on a table or work bench, so it will be easier to work on.
Locate the starter and remove the screws that secure it to the side of the chain saw. Remove the starter from the chain saw.
Pull out the starter cord and place it into the notch on the drive pulley. Let the pulley rotate slowly backwards to release tension on the recoil spring.
Insert a socket wrench onto the bolt that is in the center of the driver pulley. Turn the wrench counter-clockwise to loosen the bolt. Remove the drive disc, the drive disc spring and the drive pulley from the chain saw.
Remove the starter cord from the drive pulley and starter housing. Wrap the new starter cord around the drive pulley at least three times.
Connect the starter pulley to the end recoil spring on the chain saw. Place the drive disc spring and the drive disk back into place and then insert the bolt in the pulley. Tighten the bolt with the wrench.
Thread the starter cord through the hole that is in the starter housing and then tie the cord into a knot.
Place the starter cord into the notch on the drive pulley. Turn the pulley at least two turns clockwise.
Remove the cord from the notch and then pull the handle to stretch the cord.
Set the starter back onto the chain saw and secure it with the screws to complete the project.
Tips & Warnings
Use a utility knife to cut the old cord from the starter housing if you cannot undo the cord.
If you do not tension the new start cord, it will not engage the pulley correctly to start the engine.
