The drive belt on your self-propelled mower doesn't ever catch your attention until the moment it stops working. When that happens, you'll know it because the mower's self-propelled mechanism won't pull forward even though the engine continues to run normally. Age generally causes the drive belt to fray or break. With the right tools and persistence, you can replace the belt on your self-propelled mower in less than a half hour.
Things You'll Need
Work gloves
3/8-inch socket wrench
5/8-inch socket wrench
Standard screwdriver
1/2-inch socket wrench
Replacement drive belt
Put work gloves on to protect your hands from accidental cuts. Pull the spark plug wire to prevent the mower from accidentally starting. Tilt the mower on its side with the carburetor and air filter positioned on top.
Remove the two screws that hold the belt cover in place by using a 3/8-inch socket wrench. Use a 5/8-inch socket wrench to unscrew and remove the blade bolt. Lift off the blade. Remove the screws securing the belt guide, using a 1/2-inch socket wrench.
Move the belt guide free of the belt drive assembly. Take the belt off of the assembly, and push it toward the pulley. Remove the belt from the pulley and bracket fingers by leveraging it with a standard screwdriver.
Wrap the replacement drive belt around the pulley, then guide it through the bracket fingers. Maneuver the drive belt through the base and wrap it around the belt drive assembly. Return the belt guide to its original position over the belt drive assembly.
Reinstall the screws holding the belt guide in place by using a 1/2-inch socket wrench. Place the belt on the crankshaft with the cutting side of the blade closest to the engine. Screw in the blade bolts that hold the blade in place, with a 3/8-inch socket wrench.
Tilt the mower upright and replace the belt cover, securing its screws with a 3/8-inch socket wrench. Reattach the spark plug wire.
