How to Repair a Craftsman Riding Lawn Mower. Riding lawn mowers drastically cut down on the time it takes to mow a large lawn. When they break, however, they are usually seen as big, expensive pains. Repairs on riding lawn mowers may take a few hours, but they can be done at home with a few tools and replacement parts.

Things You'll Need
Craftsman riding lawn mower
Car jack
3/8-inch wrench
Flat screwdriver
New mower blade
New oil filter
Oil filter wrench
New spark plug
Fix a Flat
Look at each tire for any holes or flats. If any tire seems flat, try pumping some air into the tire by removing the stem cover inside the wheel and hooking a pump to the tire. If a tire is flat from a nail and cannot be fixed, it will have to be replaced.
Slide a car jack under the tractor frame and lift it up.
Remove the tire cap with a 3/8-inch wrench. Slide the wheel off the mower. Remove the tire from the rim by prying it off with a flat screwdriver. Place a new tire on the rim and place the wheel back on the mower. Tighten the bolt on the front of the tire before lowering the mower.
Replace Mower Blade
Move the deck adjuster to its highest position. Move yourself under the mower and check the blades. If the blades are misshaped and have dents, they will have to be replaced.
Take a 3/8-inch wrench and unscrew the arbor bolt in the middle of the blade.
Remove the broken blade. Slide a new blade on and then re-screw the arbor bolt back into place.
Replace Oil Filter
Grab the mower's hood by the handle in front of the steering wheel and lift until it locks into position. Find the oil filter, a cylindrical piece on the side of the engine.
Unscrew the old filter with the oil filter wrench.
Place a new filter in the filter slot and tighten it with the oil filter wrench.
Replace Spark Plug
Locate the black hose that runs alongside the engine. Halfway along the hose is the spark plug.
Pull the hose off both sides of the plug with your hands.
Attach a new spark plug in between the two hose pieces, in the same fashion as the old plug.
Tips & Warnings
Look through the owner's manual for instructions on how to do nearly anything with an engine, such as maintenance.
Turn the mower off before doing any repairs.
