When you are mowing with your MTD lawn tractor, there is a good chance that you may run into something and knock off your steering alignment. This means when you are attempting to drive straight, the lawn mower may veer in one direction. Fixing the steering on your MTD lawn tractor is well worth the time, as you only need a few tools and it will save you the money you would have paid a mechanic to fix it.
Things You'll Need
Flat-head screwdriver
Socket wrench and set
Park the MTD lawn tractor on a level spot.
Turn the steering wheel so the wheels are pointed straight forward--the steering wheel should be off center.
Pry the cap off the center of the MTD lawn tractor steering wheel with the flat-head screwdriver.
Position the proper-sized socket onto the center nut holding the steering wheel onto the notched steering wheel shaft. Unscrew the nut by turning it counterclockwise while holding the steering wheel in place with your other hand.
Pull the steering wheel up and off of the shaft. Turn the steering wheel so the center bar on the steering wheel is horizontal to the front of the MTD lawn tractor wheels.
Slide the steering wheel back on the shaft and screw the center nut back on tightly. Snap the cap back over the center of the steering wheel.
