Crabgrass is one of the last things that homeowners want to see in their lawns. This weed not only is visually unappealing, but it is also highly aggressive and capable of killing surrounding grass and plants. There are plenty of chemical herbicides on the market that are directly aimed at eliminating crabgrass, but there is an alternative to those that may be less expensive. You can begin your crabgrass extermination project right now if you have some vinegar and a few other common household items on hand.
Things You'll Need
Vinegar
Salt
Dish soap
Large Bowl
Whisk
Spray bottle
Whisk together 4 cups of vinegar, 1/4 cup of table salt, and 2 teaspoons of dish soap in a large bowl. Mix until all the ingredients are completely blended.
Pour the mixture into a spray bottle.
Locate your crabgrass and point the nozzle of the spray bottle directly at its base.
Spray the vinegar mixture as close as you can to the grass. The mixture is a non-selective herbicide that will kill any vegetation it comes in contact with, but a close spraying will prevent the mixture from spreading too far.
Wait for several hours for browning and wilting to occur. These signs indicate that the crabgrass has been killed.
Remove any dead crabgrass by pulling it from the ground. Dead crabgrass can smother surrounding vegetation. Its removal is imperative to the health of your lawn.
Tips & Warnings
Spraying the vinegar mixture during the daytime will maximize its effectiveness.
