Removing a Craftsman lawnmower deck takes time and patience. There are many belts, pulleys and metal rods that need to be disconnected before the deck can be removed. Even though the work involved is hard, it is easily doable at home. This will save you a lot of money in repairs as technician costs to remove a lawnmower deck are around $100.
Things You'll Need
Gloves
Place the blade engage, which is located in front of the steering wheel, into the off position.
Move the deck height adjuster, which is located on the fender to the left of the driver's seat, to the lowest possible cutting height by pushing it to the floor.
Dismount the tractor and look for the center pulley in the middle of the deck with a belt wrapped around it. This is the blade engage pulley. Remove the belt by unscrewing the rod that secures the pulley with your hand. The screw is designed to come off with your hand, so no tools are needed. Remove the belt after taking off the screw.
Look at the rear section of the deck near the rear tire on the left side. Just above the bolt for the height adjustment is a bow-tie clip. Pull the clip out. Go to the right side and remove the same bow-tie clip.
Move the height adjustment on the fender to the highest cutting position. This will move the frame and its cables away from the deck.
Remove the metal rod that is still connecting the frame to the center of the deck by pulling it out of the locking hole with your hand. Find the metal cord wrapped in a metal coil in the deck's center.
Unhook the bow-tie pin that connects the metal cord and coil to the deck. The deck is now free from the mower.
Slide the deck out from under the mower.
Tips & Warnings
Craftsman lawnmowers are different than other lawnmowers, so the deck removal process will be different.
Wear safety gloves while removing the deck.
