Scotts Turf Builder with Halts Crabgrass Preventer is a granular fertilizer specially formulated for lawns. Its proprietary formulation typically requires only one application to increase both the green color of lawns as well the soil's ability to retain moisture. In addition, it kills any existing crabgrass and prevents additional crabgrass from growing year-round. Scotts Turf Builder with Halts can be applied to all grass varieties except for dichondra or bentgrass lawns.
Things You'll Need
Fertilizer spreader
Wait until the late winter or early spring to apply the fertilizer to the grass. The ideal months for application are from February to April -- before the average daytime temperature rises to 80 degrees F.
Fill a fertilizer spreader with the Scotts fertilizer and set the dispenser rate on the spreader to a rate of 2.8 lbs per 1,000 square feet of lawn. You can use either a drop spreader or a broadcast fertilizer spreader.
Place the fertilizer spreader at one edge of the lawn and pull or push on the side bar to begin the flow of fertilizer.
Walk straight across the lawn until you reach the other side. Turn around and walk in another straight line directly beside the first line of application. Continue until you have walked over the entire lawn once.
Tips & Warnings
Do not water before or after applying Scotts Turf Builder with Halts.
Scotts Turf Builder with Halts comes in two bag sizes, one that covers 5,000 square feet of lawn and another that covers 15,000.
You cannot plant new grass seed for four months after applying the fertilizer since it prevents seed germination.
Do not apply the product more than twice per year.
