Expect your Stihl chain saw to start easily. Whether you need to clear acreage or take down an old tree, your Stihl chain saw should start with a few easy pulls on the starting rope. Many firefighters, foresters and arborists choose Stihl chain saws as part of their workday tools. They need a chain saw that starts quickly and powering up a Stihl chain saw represents a straightforward operation. The easy to start operation of a Stihl appeals to all chain saw users.
Rest the chain saw on a flat surface and apply the chain brake. To apply the brake, press the front hand bar forward until it stops.
Remove the scabbard (the blade cover) from the chain saw's guide bar.
Press the decompression valve if your chain saw has one. Pressing the valve makes it easier to start the engine. Locate the valve above and to the left of the pull handle.
Activate the fuel pump with the actuator button, if you have one, on your chain saw. Find the soft actuator button located behind and to the right of the chain saw handle. Press it several times. This promotes quick starting and fewer rope pulls.
Place the indicator of the slide control to the "Choke/Cold Start" position. To complete this action, press the interlock of the throttle trigger and while applying pressure, compress the throttle trigger and push the slide control all the way down.
Position the chain saw on level ground. The bar or chain must not touch the ground as that may damage the blades when the saw starts up.
Place your left hand on the front handle and grasp the handle of the starter rope in your right hand. At the same time, place the toe of your right shoe through the chain saw's rear handle to stabilize the machine.
Pull the handle of the starter rope slowly. When you encounter resistance let the rope retract. Then pull the starter rope several times vigorously. Pull the rope straight up so it stays free of the fan housing.
Listen for the engine and when it starts and then stops, set the choke to the open position. Move the slide control to the half-throttle position to open the choke.
Continue to pull the starter rope until the chain saw starts.
Flick the trigger with your finger when the saw starts and the slide control will automatically move into the idle position.
Tips & Warnings
Use fresh gasoline to prevent sediment from fouling a chain saw engine.
Do not start your chainsaw with the scabbard attached.
