Tomatoes are successful summertime vegetables, and are some of the most popular plants in home vegetable gardens. Professional gardeners and commercial planters around the world work to breed and hybridize tomatoes to increase yield, disease resistance and tomato size. One very successful hybrid is Bush Goliath, which is a compact bush that produces large 4-inch fruits. Although these plants are small, and don't take much space, they do have large appetites, and require lots of nutrition to bear their oversize tomatoes.
Things You'll Need
Quick-draining soil
Organic compost
Starter fertilizer
Nitrogen fertilizer
Stakes/veggie cages
Plant Bush Goliath tomatoes in areas where they'll get full sun every day. These tomatoes require at least eight hours of sunshine to produce their large fruit. Space Bush Goliath tomatoes at 24 to 36 inches, in rows 3 to 4 feet apart.
Give Bush Goliath tomatoes the right growing foundation at planting. These are hungry, thirsty plants that like plenty of organic nutrition. Plant the tomatoes in a mixture of half quick-draining soil and half organic compost, mixed with your natural garden soil. Add starter fertilizer at planting to give the tomatoes phosphorous for root growth.
Stake Bush Goliath tomatoes with stakes or veggie cages to support them when they get old enough. This is especially important during the development of the large, heavy fruit.
Feed Bush Goliath tomatoes every five weeks with nitrogen, tomato-specific or organic fertilizer, and give them organic compost once a month. Tomatoes won't bloom or bear fruit without the right nutritional resources.
Water Bush Goliath tomatoes with 2 to 3 inches of water a week. Tomato fruits are 90 percent water, so plants that grow large fruits like Goliaths need plenty of water.
