It's advisable to store a garden hose on a hose reel instead of letting it sit on the ground or wrapping it around a hook which can cause pressure to build on a small section of the hose wall. This can lead to separation of the external and internal sections of the hose. The round body of the hose reel spreads pressure over a large section of the hose, eliminating liner separation. Hooking up the hose to a hose reel correctly ensures the connections do not leak and waste water.
Things You'll Need
Cotton swab
Petroleum-based lubricant
Hose
Place a mobile hose reel two to three feet from the hose bib connected to the house. Mount a stationary hose reel to the side of the hose -- near the hose bib -- with the enclosed hardware.
Dip one end of a cotton swab in a petroleum-based lubricant and rub it on the inside of the female end of the connector hose supplied with the hose reel as well as on the female connector attached to the hose reel body.
Insert the male end of the connector hose into the lubricated female connector on the hose reel body. Turn the female connector clockwise while holding the male end of the connector hose in place. Continue turning the female connector until the connection is hand tight.
Push the lubricated female end of the connector hose onto the male threads of the hose bib. Turn the female connector clockwise until the connection is tight.
Wipe the cotton swab around the inside of the female connector of a hose. Thread the hose connector onto the exposed male threads on the hose reel body. Tighten the connection by turning the female side of the connection clockwise.
Turn the valve handle of the hose bib counterclockwise to send water through the hose. Tighten leaking connections to stop the leak.
Turn off the hose bib. Turn the hose reel handle clockwise to roll the connected hose onto the hose reel.
