Terra cotta pots are ideal for growing and housing all sorts of plants and flowers. The porosity of the pots also allows roots to breathe. The issue, however, with terra cotta pots is that they need to be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before using them again for a different plant. It is easiest to clean terra cotta pots outside on a nice day since the job tends to be a bit messy and dirty.
Things You'll Need
Steel wool
Baking soda
Water
Soft brush
Take the old plant out of the pot and remove all of the soil. Allow any soil that is caked on the sides to dry.
Scrub the inside of the pot with steel wool.
Wash the pot out using water and scrub using the steel wool. Do not use soap.
Make a paste with water and baking soda. Spread it on the white crust that forms on the outside of the pot. Scrub this area with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly and allow the pot to dry.
Open all of the windows in your kitchen. Line the bottom of your oven with aluminum foil. Turn on the oven to 220 degrees. Put the pot in the oven and let it cook for an hour. This will sanitize the pot. To off the oven and let the pot sit in the oven for another hour or two. Do not move it until it is cool, since hot pots tend to break.
