Find a sunny planting site. Potted peach trees should be planted early in the spring or late in the fall.
Remove the weeds and other vegetation in a 3-foot diameter circle. June Gold peach trees thrive when there is little or no competition for nutrients or moisture.
Dig a hole with a spade or shovel that is twice as deep and twice as wide as June Gold peach tree's container. Loosen the sides and bottom of the hole with the edge of your spade or shovel. This helps the roots penetrate the sides of the hole.
Amend the soil with a scoop of compost. This helps provide nutrients to the peach tree's roots that are released slowly over time.
Remove the June Gold peach tree from the container. Tip the container on its side and grasp the trunk close to the root ball. Gently pull on the tree. If it does not come out easily, use a utility knife to cut the container away. Be careful to not cut too deep or you may damage the root section.
Backfill some of the amended soil into the hole. Place the root ball into the hole and test it for height. The root ball should be level with the ground unless you are adding mulch, then place the root ball 1 to 2 inches above the soil level. Adjust the soil below the root ball until you have it right.
Inspect the June Gold peach tree. It should be centered and plumb in the hole. When it is, backfill the amended soil into the hole. Tamp the soil in place with your feet.
Water the June Gold peach tree thoroughly to a depth of 18 inches by turning the water on to a slow flow. Fill in with amended soil if the ground settles around the tree. Water the soil deeply once a week for the first year unless there is ample rainfall in the area. Once the June Gold peach trees are established, they are drought tolerant.
Add a 3- to 4-inch layer of mulch around the June Gold peach tree. The mulch helps the soil retain moisture and prevents weeds from growing.
Fertilize the June Gold peach tree in the spring and fall with a balanced fertilizer. Apply the fertilizer according to manufacturer's directions.
