The persimmon tree has been cultivated for centuries in its native land of China. It was later grown in Japan and Korea and came to California in the mid 1800s. There are thousands of varieties. Most persimmon trees are either male or female. Many are grown specifically for the fruit which can readily be found in supermarkets during season.
The Tree
The persimmon tree grows from 30 to 70 feet in height. It is a tree with drooping branches and leaves and has a tropical look. Its leaves begin as a pale yellow-green and mature into a shiny green. Tea can be made from the leaves.
Flowers
The female persimmon tree produces single cream-colored flowers while the male flowers have a pink tint to them and are born in clusters of three.
Fruit
Persimmon fruit varies in color from light yellow orange to dark orange red. They can weigh as little as a few ounces to more than 1 pound. A tree will produce a large crop of edible fruit and, as with most fruit trees, the fruit comes during the summer months. The fruit is sweet when ripe but has an extremely bitter taste if eaten before it has ripened.
Culture
Persimmon tress need full sun. They can withstand many different conditions but do not do well in salty soil. They are basically problem free and do well with just a little fertilizer. They are grown up and down the east coast of the United States from Florida to Connecticut and as far west as California.
American Persimmon Trees
American persimmon trees are easy to find. They will often produce fruit as early as their third year after planting and will continue to do so for 50 years or longer. They also make an attractive addition to any landscape.
Varities
They are thousands of different varieties that grow differently under different conditions. Most will produce fruit and grow to be beautiful trees. They are versatile and adaptable trees.
Fact
The scientific name (Diospyros virginiana) for the American Persimmon means "fruit of the gods" and is a reference to its sweet golden-orange fruit.
