When selecting a fruit tree for planting at home, pear trees are a popular selection. But before purchasing a fruit tree, it is important to understand the climate and soil requirements necessary for pear trees to thrive.
Climate
The Bartlett, Bosc, D'anjou, Kieffer and Shinko pears prefer climates where the average low temperature is between -30 degrees Fahrenheit and 30 degrees Fahrenheit, while the Shinseiki, Blakes Pride and Potomac varieties prefer slightly warmer conditions and can thrive with averages only as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Time Frame
It is best to plant a pear tree in late winter or early spring, between late February and early April in the northern hemisphere.
Moisture
Pear trees do not thrive well when conditions are too dry, making humus rather than sandy soil preferable.
Acidity
For the best fruit, the soil for a pear tree should be slightly acidic. As the soil becomes more alkaline, iron is leached from the pears, according to Backyard Gardener.
Considerations
Smaller pear trees (dwarfs and semi-dwarfs) produce fruit more quickly than standard trees in any type of climate or soil conditions.
