Tomatoes are among the most widely planted home vegetables in Oklahoma. High yielding and easy to grow, tomatoes survive in a wide range of conditions, but they should be planted at the right time for the best chances of a healthy, productive crop.
Time Frame
Spring is the time to plant tomatoes in Oklahoma, but the exact date depends on a variety of factors. The most important factor is temperature. Tomatoes are highly sensitive to frost, particularly when young, and a night of subfreezing temperatures can wipe out your crop. Wait until all danger of frost has passed before putting your plants in the ground.
Climate & Location
In the Panhandle region, the coldest part of the state, the average last spring frost date is April 7. Wait at least a week after this date to plant, and the Oklahoma State University Extension recommends waiting until April 25. In the warmer, southeastern corner of Oklahoma, the last frost is usually around March 4. The last frost is generally later from southeast to northwest, and planting dates progress accordingly.
Preparation
Many gardeners buy tomato seedlings from a nursery. This is the most convenient method, since these plants are ready to plant immediately. You can also start from seed, in which case you can start six to eight weeks before the recommended planting date in your part of the state. Plant seeds in containers indoors and keep them warm and well lit. As temperatures warm, take the plants outside during the day and bring them back in at night. Once they are 6 to 8 inches tall, they are ready to transplant to your garden.
Considerations
In addition to timing, planting tomatoes in a good location is also important. Tomatoes fare best in rich, fertile soil that is moist and well drained and has a pH around 6.5. Choose a location with ample sunlight.
