Measuring Tape
A measuring tape is the simplest and most common type of measuring tool. It is simply a length of tape marked with measuring units that can be used by a single person to measure short distances or by multiple people to measure longer ones. Most measuring tapes are marked to measure in inches/feet and centimeters/meters. Measuring tapes come in all types of sturdiness and flexibility. Many come equipped in a roll-like container with a tab to hold the tape in place when extending it.
Distance Measuring Wheel
Measuring wheels consist of a single wheel attached to a rod and/or handle that a person walks along the ground to measure distance. Older, simpler versions of a measuring wheel may have a string or tape wrapped around the wheel to mark the distance from one point to the other; more advanced models often have a digital counter attached that reads the distance the wheel is pushed. A measuring wheel is often a good tool for someone needing to measure a relatively long distance without another person's help.
Sonic Measuring Tools
Sonic measuring tools are a simpler substitute for measuring tapes. These electronic handheld devices send out a beam of sound that bounces off an object and returns to the device to record the distance. These devices often have a maximum measuring range of around 50 feet. While these devices can easily be used by a single person, they will pose problems if there are objects in the way of the actual distance you are measuring.
Laser Distance Tools
Laser tools are very similar to sonic tools except that they use a concentrated light beam to measure distance. The device points the laser beam at an object, and the distance to that object is shown on the device. You can also place the device on the ground or attach it to a wall for accurate wall-to-wall or floor-to-ceiling measuring.
