Landscaping your backyard using Italian-style decorations will transform your outdoor living space into a cozy Italian getaway. Turning your lawn into an Italian-themed exterior does not require major work, just the implementation of a few key features. Simply incorporate fountains, statues, terracotta planters, and trees and flowers used in Italian landscaping.
Fountains
Fountains are displayed throughout Italy as well as in personal gardens, so adding one to your lawn gives it an Italian appeal instantly. Place a standing water feature in the middle of your outdoor space or attach a water component to an exterior wall.
Statues
Add a statue to your backyard to enhance your Italian style garden. Put the statue in a corner as a focal point for the yard or combine the statue with the water feature by purchasing a statue that shoots water. A water statue requires more lawn space than a basic statue because it has a pool at the bottom to catch the water. This Italian landscaping element also works well in the middle of your backyard or placed in a corner.
Terracotta Planters
Place terracotta planters throughout the backyard and line any pathways you have throughout the yard. Terracotta planters are available in many sizes, shapes, and colors, but choose earthy brown and red tones to adhere to Italian style landscaping. The size and shape does not matter and you can select a variety of sizes to suit different spaces throughout your lawn.
Trees
Choose citrus trees, olive trees, yellow woods, or a combination of the three and plant them in a planned pattern in any location you want. One way to enhance an Italian style garden with trees is to line a pathway or sitting area. Use an evergreen tree that you can shape and plant it within a small flower garden. Use deciduous trees such as a Judas tree, silk floss tree, or Hong Kong orchid tree along your home and underneath windows. A deciduous tree is full during warm months and sheds its leaves in the cold season therefore it will shade your home to keep it cool and allow sun to filter through at appropriate times.
Flowers
Annuals such as marigolds, petunias, and pansies, and bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, and freesias are some of the most common plants used in Italian gardens. Plant these flowers in flower beds, along walkways, and inside the terracotta pots.
