Weeping cherry trees are a wonderful addition to any garden. They are most exotic when planted next to water, which reflects the blooms in early spring and the tree's weeping silhouette throughout the rest of the year. Weeping cherry trees are hardy to zones 5 to 9, need well-drained, moist soil, and should be planted where their branches won't be damaged by strong winds.
Higan
This tree produces pink or white blossoms in early spring and dark green foliage once blooming has ended. It grows to a height of 20 to 40 feet, and spreads 15 to 30 feet. This tree has a moderate growth rate, and produces a rounded, weeping shape.
Autumnalis
This tree produces vibrant pink double blooms in spring, and random blooms in fall. It tends to grow straighter than other varieties of weeping cherry tree, and will reach a height of 30 feet. Like all weeping cherry trees, it prefers moist, well-drained soil. Because of its preference to moist areas, it is susceptible to fungus. The branches of this tree are easily damaged in storms, so be sure to plant it where it is protected from strong wind.
Pendula
This tree produces light pink blooms in early spring. It grows to a height of 40 feet. The branches of this tree trail the ground, as they grow faster than the trunk. To prevent disease, trim the branches so they don't touch the ground.
Snow Fountain
This is the dwarf variety of weeping cherry tree. It grows to a height of 15 feet and is excellent for compact gardens or small yards. This tree needs moist soil, but doesn't require as much water due to its smaller size. It produces white blooms in early spring. This variety of weeping cherry tree is more resistant to disease than other varieties
Care
All weeping cherry trees need to be pruned to a single leader (trunk) that is supported in early growth until it is strong enough to hold the weight of the branches. Water the tree frequently and deeply during bud formation, flowering and early growth.
Mulch around the base of the tree in early spring, to keep roots cool and moist.
Cherry trees are more resistant to pests when the soil is kept moist.
Fertilize your weeping cherry tree with a slow-release fertilizer or blood and bone as the flowers begin to fall and foliage growth begins.
