Stihl 026 Chain Saw Specifications
The Stihl 026 is an older mid-size chain saw that was replaced by the MS 260 when Stihl revamped its numbering system in 2001.
The Stihl 026 chain saw is an older model that is well regarded for its dependability and power. The company introduced it in 1993 and sold it until 2001, when it revamped its model number system, and the 026 became the MS 260. A tidbit that may interest Stihl chain saw aficionados: The "MS" in the model number of contemporary saws stands for "Motor Schlagen," which is German for chain saw.
Engine Specifications
The Stihl 026 is a mid-size saw. According to the manual:
Engine displacement is 48.7 cubic centimeters (2.97 cubic inches)
Piston bore is 44 millimeters (1.73 inches)
Piston stroke is 32 millimeters (1.26 inches)
Engine Idle Speed is 2,800 revolutions per minute.
Without the bar and chain, the 026 weighs 10.4 pounds (4.7 kilograms) and the 026W weighs 4.9 kilograms (10.8 pounds) -- about 1 kilogram (2 pounds) lighter than the 028, a model contemporary to the 026. The 026 and 026W accept a 16, 18 or 20-inch (**40-, 45- or 50-centimeter**) bar, although pros using the saw note that the longest bar reduces the cutting power.
Fuel, Ignition and Lubrication Systems
The two-stroke engine operates on a 50:1 fuel/oil mixture, and the manufacturer recommends fuel with a minimum octane rating of 89. The saw has a breakerless ignition system powered by an M14 X 1.25 plug and an all-position diaphragm carburetor with an integrated fuel pump. Chain lubricant is stored in 0.29-liter (0.61-pint) tank and distributed by an automatic plunger-type pump. The user can also control oil flow manually.
Safety Features
The Stihl 026 offers a number of safety features to protect the saw and reduce the risk of injury. These include:
A chain brake, which engages automatically in a kickback situation and which the user can engage manually.
A chain catcher that prevents the chain from flying back toward the operator when it breaks.
Bumper spikes that grip the wood being cut to reduce the risk of kickback.
A front hand guard that prevents the operator's hand from slipping off the handle toward the chain.
A rear hand guard to protect the operator's other hand.
An anti-vibration system, which prevents the operator from tiring when using the saw.
Anti-Kickback Bar and Chain
The 026 is designed for use with green- or yellow-labeled anti-kickback bars and chains with a 0.325- or 3/8-inch pitch.
