Several dwarf species of rhododendron do well as part of home landscaping.
Rhododendron Fastigiatum
According to Rhododendron and Azalea Pages, this dwarf species of rhododendron is hardy to USDA zone 6 and has shiny blue-gray leaves about ? inch in length. It produces bell-shaped pink to lavender flowers an inch across and grows to be about 3 feet in height and 12 to 24 inches in width.
Rhododendron Keiskei
This dwarf rhododendron species is also called the dwarf Kiesk rhododendron. It produces yellow flowers about 2 inches across, with olive leaves about 2 inches in length. As a spreading plant, this rhododendron is only about 2 ? feet in height but grows to be as much as 4 feet wide. It is hardy to zone 6 and provides a touch of color in winter, when its leaves turn red in the cold weather.
Rhododendron Racemosum
Also called the dwarf Mayflower rhododendron, this spreading plant can be up to 5 feet in width and has wiry stems with multiple branches. Only about 2 feet high, this plant produces small flowers about ? inch wide in pink or white. It has leaves 2 inches in length, with smooth tops and scaly gray undersides. Rhododendron racemosum is hardy to USDA zone 6.
Dora Amateis
This plant is a hybrid dwarf rhododendron hardy to zone 6 and growing to between 3 and 4 feet tall. It produces large, striking white flowers speckled with green, about 3 inches across. The leaves are dark green but can have a metallic sheen in full sun.
Moerheim
Another hybrid rhododendron variety, Moerheim is a dense, low shrub about 3 feet in height and nearly the same width. Flowers are about 1 inch across and violet to purple in color. The leaves are shiny, green and about 2 inches in length, but turn dark red or maroon in cold weather.
Purple Gem
This very small dwarf rhododendron grows in a dense mount about 1 ? to 2 feet in height, with fairly large purple flowers, at about 2 inches across. The leaves are bluish green, but turn rust-colored with age, providing a very striking appearance.
