When harvesting cherry trees, it is important to have the correct tools for the job. It can make the difference between having a successful and enjoyable harvest, or spending hours of backbreaking work in the trees. Proper tools can be found at gardening centers and just a few of them will make your cherry tree harvest faster and easier.
Orchard Ladder
The ladder needed to harvest cherry trees all depends on the height of the cherry tree. Household ladders aren't suitable because they usually aren't sturdy enough. Ladders in come in a range of designs (such as straight ladders to lean up against a tree), four-legged ladders or the the three-legged, traditional tripod orchard ladder. Choose a lightweight aluminum ladder, which is easy to transport but also very sturdy.
Gloves
Gloves are needed to protect your hand while picking cherries, to avoid any possible cuts and to limit staining of the skin.
Harvesting Bucket
A bucket with a harness is needed so you can harvest cherries with both hands, allowing the bucket to hang off the ladder. Choose one that is aluminum for lightweight transport.
Hand Shears
Hand shears or small garden scissors about six to eight inches in length can help to trim small branches off and cut cherry stems. These shears should have narrow, sharp, stainless steel blades with comfortable handles that fit your hands.
