Ideas for Decorating a Back Yard

Decorating a back yard can be a daunting task, because it brings to mind landscapers, sod and a lot of expense. Luckily, it doesn't have to be this way. There are some simple things you can do to decorate your back yard that won't break the budget or require the services of a landscaper. Even better, these things are all easy to do without having to construct anything, pour cement or install a sprinkler system. Use these basic ideas to transform your back yard into an oasis the whole family can enjoy.

Many homeowners are afraid to start adding plants to the backyard, because they think they have to do it all at once. This is not the case. Try planting some annuals in a few pots and placing the pots in a cluster in a corner of the yard, or one pot on each corner of a patio. Annuals are inexpensive, and pots can often be found for pennies at garage sales or thrift stores. In fact, you can use almost anything in the place of a traditional pot: An old wagon, a pair of boots or even a rusted wheelbarrow. The added bonus of pots is that you can move them around until you find a look you like.

Picnics on the grass are nice, but most adults would prefer a chair to sit in. Try placing a bench under a tree and adding a pot of flowers on either side of it. Keep it neat. Even the simplest back yard looks much nicer when it is free of weeds and debris. Remove all garbage, and pull the weeds. Then, finish it off each area with a layer of beauty bark, gravel or other groundcover. This does not cost much money, but it adds a neat, crisp and finished look to your back yard. If you have children, consider creating a play house or storage shed for them to store their toys in. This will cut down on backyard clutter and add a cute architectural element to your back yard.
