Some home builders decide they want to save money by clearing their new home sites themselves. Most of these projects begin as do-it-yourselfers, but they end up with crews being hired. Many times, hand tools and a chain saw won't cut it when there are trees to clear. Often times, a bulldozer or other heavy construction equipment needs to be brought in. The best way to clear land is with some help.
Survey the Site
Before clearing the site, survey the land to check for valuable wood. Some of the trees you intend to clear may be valuable to a timber purchaser. Get several estimates. Some companies that purchase timber will come to the site and remove the trees to be certain the wood remains in good condition. Be careful of some companies. While some may be considerate of the landowner and respectful of the land, others will leave the land looking as if a tornado hit it.
Check Regulations
Check the regional and state regulations with regards to land-clearing, including silt fencing, burning, burying organic material, timber permits, tree ordinances and composting. Some environmentalists believe clearing land is harmful. You might be allowed to burn limbs and brush but may have to grind bushes and trees.
Select the Tools and Machinery
You can rent a commercial-grade chain saw and some safety equipment. You might need training to use one. Land-clearing is very dangerous. Not only can a tree fall on you, but after it is down, it can roll over and crush you. If you do use a chain saw, don't let several trees fall on each other because they are hard to get to and remove later. You can rent a skid steer load to move heavy stumps, and you may want an excavator backhoe or tracked excavator to help dig some drainage trenches and take stumps out more easily.
Select the Method of Removal
You can take down the whole tree, and then relocate it on the land to be processed later. Or you can cut the trees down to about a 3-foot stump and let the bulldozer take them out the rest of the way. Check with the rental company to see if it offers training. Make sure you have some help to stay safe.
