Mosquitoes can turn a pleasant summer evening outdoors into a miserable experience of itchy welts for your baby. DEET is the most commonly used mosquito repellent. However, due to the potential for toxicity, DEET should never be used on a child under 2 years old. This forces parents to find alternatives for protecting their small children from mosquitoes.
Plant-Based Repellants
A variety of plant based products are popular for repelling mosquitoes. According to a study done by Dr. Mark S. Fradin, the plant-based repellents that are at least moderately effective are citronella, both as a skin application and when burnt as a candle or oil, and a combination of soybean oil, geranium oil and coconut oil available in the United States under the brand name Bite Blocker.
Skin Care Products
Several DEET-free skin care products contain diisopropyl adipate and benzophenone, both of which have been shown to have limited insect repellent characteristics. This includes the Skin-So-Soft product from Avon.
Prevention of Contact
Even with the use of baby-safe mosquito repellents, children should be dressed in lightweight, loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothing, and their strollers and play pens should be covered with mosquito netting to prevent mosquitoes from getting to their skin.
