Types
Desert rose, century plant and shell ginger represent just a small sample of fast-growing, drought tolerant hedges for full sun locations. Other good choices include giant milkweed and island mallow. Some plants such as bougainvillea naturally grow more like a vine but can be trained to grow as shrubs. Holly shrubs work in such environments and come in many cultivars of various sizes.
Considerations
Fast-growing hedges need annual pruning to keep their shape, contain excessive growth and avoid a leggy appearance. Pruning after flowering works best with most shrubs to avoid affecting the current year's blooms.
Warning
Some drought-tolerant hedges grow well only in sandy or rocky, quick-draining soils. Examples include century plant and giant milkweed. Do not attempt to grow such hedges in moist, clay soils. Choose drought-tolerant species, such as island mallow.
