Pre-emergent Herbicides
Most pre-emergent crabgrass herbicides are safe for zoysia, including oryzalin, benefin, pendimethalin and atrazine. Follow directions carefully, because herbicides may have specific timing or temperature requirements.
Post-emergent Herbicides
After crabgrass emerges, use 2,4-D, dicamba or triclopyr according to the manufacturer's directions. Many other herbicides are also safe for zoysia. Never use products containing sethoxydim on zoysia lawns. If you have small infestations of crabgrass, treat the individual crabgrass clumps with a broad-spectrum herbicide.
Contraindications
Newly sprigged zoysia lawns or lawns emerging from winter dormancy are particularly sensitive to herbicides. Even though a product may be safe for mature lawns, read the herbicide labels carefully before using on your thin or newly-planted zoysia. Most herbicides are unsafe for new or establishing zoysia lawns.
