When storing your John Deere lawn mower for the season or making repairs to the carburetor or fuel filter, it is necessary to empty the gas from the fuel tank. The simplest way to empty the fuel tank is to simply allow the mower to run until it runs out of gas. This is rather expensive though if the tank happens to be full. A better way to drain the gas from a John Deere lawn mower is to siphon it from the mower to a spare gas can.
Things You'll Need
Gas can
Hand siphon
Place the John Deere mower on a level surface. If you have a riding mower, set the parking brake and raise the seat so you have access to the filler cap of the fuel tank.
Set a spare gas can near the fuel tank of the John Deere mower. Remove the fuel tank and gas can caps.
Insert the solid tube of a hand siphon into the mower fuel tank. The bottom of the solid tube should be at an angle in the bottom of the fuel tank.
Place the flexible tube of the siphon into the spare gas can. Just insert the end of the tube enough that it is inside the can, but not all the way in the can.
Squeeze and release the pump bubble handle at the top of the hand siphon. As you squeeze and release, the siphon sucks up fuel from the lawn mower and drains it into the gas can. Continue squeezing and releasing the pump bubble handle until all the fuel is out of the John Deere lawn mower.
Tips & Warnings
Hand siphons are available at home improvement centers.
Dry off the hand siphon when you finish and store in a safe place away from heat sources.
