When your 6-horsepower Tecumseh engine won't start or dies right after it starts, but there is plenty of gas, a good spark plug and a clean air filter in it, then you can easily identify the problem as a gummed-up carburetor. With time, dust and debris will make the gas gum up in the carburetor and prevent it form being properly injected into the Tecumseh engine's piston chamber.
Things You'll Need
Pliers
Bucket
Carburetor cleaner
Canned air
Gas
Follow the rubber hose from the bottom of the gas tank to the side of the carburetor.
Pinch the clamp holding the hose to the side of the carburetor with the pliers and slide the clamp down the hose a few inches.
Pull the hose off the carburetor and direct it into the bucket to catch the old gas.
Spray carburetor cleaner into the side port on the carburetor for several seconds. Allow it to soak for a few minutes. Spray canned air into the carburetor for several seconds. Reattach the hose to the side of the carburetor.
Open the pliers up wide and unscrew the tin can on the bottom of the carburetor. This tin can is the fuel bowl. Dump out the gummy gas in the bowl. Spray carburetor cleaner into the bowl and onto the float and valve above the hole. Spray the entire area well with canned air. Screw the fuel bowl back on tightly.
Fill the gas tank with fresh gas.
