Florida is well known as one of America's bug centers and one of the most common pests in this state is the black ant. Unless you've studied all of the species of black ants, there's no way of knowing the most effective way to get rid of these pesky insects, so you may have to try several methods multiple times before ridding yourself of an infestation. Poisons are the most effective repellent, but if you prefer a natural solution, there are a few options using common household ingredients that will keep black ants at bay.
Things You'll Need
Cinnamon powder
Cayenne powder
Ground black pepper
Scented talcum powder
Peppermint oil
Borax
Sugar
Water
Spray bottle
Pour one quart of water and 2 to 3 teaspoons of peppermint oil into a spray bottle. Search your home for problem areas where ants tend to congregate and spray the area down with this mixture. The ants will scatter and won't return to the area. Try to follow them and spray along their trail until you find where they entered your home and saturate the area with the spray. White or apple cider vinegar is also effective as a spray if you don't mind the smell. Mix equal parts of vinegar and water and use the same spraying method.
Blend equal parts of powdered cinnamon, powdered cayenne pepper and ground black pepper to make an effective, toxin-free ant repellent. Find a congregation of ants and sprinkle the mixture on them; they'll go into a short frenzy and leave the area. Sprinkle this mixture around food canisters and other problem areas. This mixture is not recommended for use around pet food bowls.
Dust sugar bowls and other likely ant gathering spots with scented talcum powder for a pleasantly scented ant solution. Talcum powder is safe to use around pet food bowls and shouldn't irritate your pet's eyes or nose, unlike the spice blend.
Make your own slow-acting poison to wipe out an entire colony. Mix 2 tablespoons of borax, 2 cups of sugar and 1 cup of water in a small pot and boil for three minutes until the mixture is thickened. Place a small amount of the mixture in recycled jar lids and set the lids in problem areas. The ants will gather the mixture and bring it back to the colony; the queen and the rest of the ants will eat it and die.
