Ticks are small blood-sucking arachnids that can attach themselves to people and pets in the warmer summer months. Ticks can be difficult to remove from the skin once they attach themselves and they can also cause allergic reactions or spread fatal illnesses like Lyme disease. There are several essential oils that repel ticks well.
Neem Oil
Neem oil is one of the best essential oils for repelling ticks and other bugs, because it not only repels ticks but it kills them and discourages their feeding patterns. Neem oil is the oil from neem tree seed and is very potent. One ounce of neem oil can be diluted in 1 gallon of water and sprayed on people or areas of the home to repel ticks. A few drops of neem oil can also be added to your dog's collar to repel ticks.
Rose Geranium
Rose geranium oil is another essential oil that repels ticks. Rose geranium is a flowering herb with many varieties that offer differently scented aromatic essential oils. It is sometimes referred to as geranium oil and used as a dietary supplement and cooking ingredient in the place of rose water because it has a rose-like smell and flavor. It can be difficult to find, so palmerosa essential oil is sometimes substituted.
Pennyroyal
Pennyroyal, also called tickweed, is another of the best essential oils for repelling ticks. Pennyroyal is a member of the mint family, and other mint oils such as peppermint and spearmint can also be used to repel ticks. Pennyroyal should never be eaten and should only be used externally as drops or sprays to repel ticks and never on pets. Pennyroyal oil can also cause miscarriages and should not be used around pregnant women or pregnant pets.
Warning
Many different essential oils are toxic to cats and should not be used as a tick repellent on cats. Their liver cannot metabolize the oils, and feeding your cat essential oils or putting essential oils on its skin can lead to death from liver failure. Some essential oils that are toxic to cats include lemon oil, peppermint oil and tea tree oil.
