Craftsman lawn trimmers and edgers come in a variety of models, priced relatively low to mid-range. Some edgers have a Briggs and Stratton engine while others are made by Tecumseh. Most have a removable blade for easy cleaning and an easy storage position handle. No matter which model you select, however, you may run into some difficulties. Try troubleshooting the issues on your own before you spend money on repair.
Power
Check that you have enough fuel in the tank. If your Craftsman edger still will not start, perhaps you did not press the primer bulb enough. Press it slowly and fully 10 times. If you think your engine may be flooded, put the starting lever in Position 3. Old fuel can also cause problem, so you may want to drain your tank and refill it. It none of these steps solve your problem, replace or clean the spark plug and/or the spark plug arrestor.
Idling and Acceleration
If your Craftsman's engine does not idle, it may have a plugged air filter. You'll need to either replace or clean it. Old fuel can also cause this problem, as can an improper carburetor adjustment. Your owner's manual (see References) has instructions on how to adjust the carburetor.
If the engine will not accelerate, this can also be caused by old fuel, a dirty air filter or an improper carburetor adjustment. In addition, your problem may be that the spark plug arrestor needs to be cleaned or replaced.
Stalling or Weak Power
If your Craftsman lawn trimmer or edger lacks power or stalls easily, the cultivator tines may be clogged with dirt or grass. Turn the On/Off control switch to "STOP" and clean out any debris binding the tines. If this does not work, replace any old fuel, check the adjustment of the carburetor, and replace or clean the spark plug and/or the spark plug arrestor.
