Landscape gravel is crushed stone that is taken from quarrying processes, divided and sold for landscaping purposes. Gravel is a more flexible material than concrete or pavers since it can be scattered and formed easily around complex spaces. If you want to replace the gravel with something else, removing it is often easier than removing concrete or pavers. Several different kinds of gravel are used; the best kind depends on your yard and your purpose.
Small Size
Small gravel stones are usually less than 3/8 inch in diameter. This type of gravel is most comfortable to walk on, avoiding the rough feeling that larger pieces of gravel produce. If you plan to use gravel to create walkways or paths around your home, this is the gravel size for you.
Large Size
Large pieces of gravel are greater than 3/8 inch in diameter and are not as comfortable to walk on as the smaller pieces. Use this gravel to line dry riverbeds or other areas where you do not expect much foot traffic but still want gravel designs. Also, if you live in a rainy area, the rain may sweep away smaller gravel pieces, so stick with the larger gravel sizes to prevent walkway erosion.
Color
If you want colorful gravel, find granite chips that you can use to line your walkways. These may be more expensive than normal types of gravel, but the granite colors will provide a richer color than the common gray of average gravel.
Indigenous
If you are not sure what kind of gravel to get, use what type of gravel forms indigenously around your environment. Volcanic mountains, for instance, produce a large amount of lava rock gravel that makes an ideal landscaping material and often blends in with the mountainous environment as well. By matching your gravel to where you live, you can find an impressive fit that will work with most landscaping plans.
